While watching the beginning of "Supersize Me", I realized how much America is dependent on fast food. Children are learning at a young age of all the popular fast food places, and quickly find their favorite unhealthy meals from these establishments. The children are forming unhealthy eating habits that can contribute to diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol. Today, families are more prone to eating out at a fast food restaurant because it is fast and convenient; instead of taking twenty minutes out of their busy day to cook a fast healthy meal. I believe that if more families stopped eating out at fast food restaurants, like McDonalds, then the urge to get greasy fries and fattening shakes would reduce. I personally haven’t been to a fast food restaurant besides Subway in a really long time. I just don’t have the cravings for frozen food that is fried and artificial flavorings. Do people believe that fast food is to blame for obesity in America or does it fall on the individual who consumes the fast food?
There are many Americans who eat fast food. Why they eat fast food still remains somewhat of a mystery. Is it because of the reptitlian hot buttons that McDonald's uses or the fast service or the convenience of it all? Another factor which many people fail to recognize is the fact that life right now is stressful and not as easy-going as it was in the 50s. Because the stress level has increased, the rate of emotional overeaters has also risen. When some people feel overwhelmed, they tend to eat whatever is convenient and good,(usually a non-healthy choice, when was the last time you had a bad day and said to yourself, "Hmmmm, I think I will have a carrot.") Also, many of these stressed people also have families and they are most likely not going to make separate trips for dinner. When the kids see the parents eat unhealthily, then they know that it's okay too and do not think twice about it.
Maybe I am an exception, but when I’m in a bad mood I make green beans. I have always enjoyed eating my vegetables over more unhealthy choices. Eating green, healthy food makes me feel good on the inside; greasy, unhealthy food makes me sick- literally. Overeating is a problem that continues to grow in the United States and won’t be solved until portion sizes are reduced. On the other hand, would it be that bad if people ate too many vegetables? Not enough people realize the ease of throwing fresh corn or green beans on the stove to steam. Cooking vegetables is easier, cheaper, and less time consuming than driving to a fast food place, ordering, hoping the employee the order right the first time, then driving home to sit and eat. Rice is also a food that takes little to no effort to cook. Rice simmers for twenty minutes. That’s the time it would have taken to drive to McDonald’s, waited in line, waited for food, and driven home. Rice is not nearly as expensive as the price of gas it takes to pick up fast food everyday or even the price of the food itself. By making a vegetable and rice, you have most of a meal. Bake some chicken and you have dinner!
