When learning about advertising, I have found that advertisements are entertaining and persuasive. Whether I am reading a magazine or watching TV, I am influenced by all the different ads. Visual advertisements on TV appeal to the consumers in so many ways and it doesn't matter what product the advertiser is trying to sell as long as it is entertaining to the consumer. Advertising appeals to the senses by showing the consumer how the product works or looks. I think the ipod ad is entertaining, but it doesn’t make me feel like I need the product. I was more interested into listening to the song than wanting to buy the colored ipod. Most advertisements are just intended to get the consumer’s attention rather than focusing on their product. Do you think this ad is persuasive enough for you to buy the product? Or are you more focused on the music and the colors?
Apple commercials are hip, youthful, and entertaining. Apple's unique ipod commercials, including this one, have been extremely successful. Not only have they sold millions of ipods to people looking to embody the hip, youthful, vibe that they exude in their commercials, but they have also managed to make their commercials entertaining enough to watch over and over. Whether you posted this video as an example of an ad you merely enjoy or an ad that embodies what you are trying to explain, Apple would be happy to know that you spent your own time watching their commercials. I'll admit that I enjoy much of their commercials. They are hip, young, artistic, and entertaining. Apple has separated themselves from PC users in a fundamental way through their ads. This includes the way they manage their stores in a "cool" way, using young employees, and innovative, modern stores. In our Mirror on America book, one of the essays we read notes how Mac vs. PC has become cultural. Apple has managed to take themselves to a new level, not merely selling their product, but selling their image. And it has worked, just look at their sales for the last year.
