Why Is It Always The Media's Fault?
In almost every documentary, news clip, etc that discusses violence in children they drag in the media. What has the media ever really done? Wow, violent video games, fake characters killing the enemy or aliens or mythical creature, because Fox news, and CNN doesn't repeatedly show real people killing other real people. Or wait wait, it must me the lyrics from a rap song, or punk band, that must be the reason why some 13 year old boy took the life of another human being. It has nothing to do with our government reinforcing violence, by getting involved in pointless war. No it has to be Martin Scorsese's fault, because Goodfellas always make me want to murder people, abuse my boyfriend. Now that i think about it I feel stupid for even thinking that it could be anyone but the medias fault. It's not drugs, or abusive parents, it's the film industry, the record companies, and Grand Theft Auto's influence. I just wonder how all these kids are getting ahold of such violent material? Probably their parents, but it's not their fault they don't monitor their children's activities. It's the medias fault all the way, because look how long people have been killing eachother and look how long we've have major motion picture films. I mean honestly we never killed eachother for no reason before sega genisis came out.

Although I agree that the media takes a lot of blame for anything negative that "young America" does, it is simply impossible to ignore the fact that media DOES affect our children. Television, video games and music would probably be included in what most children invest their time in, so naturally that is going to have a large influence on how they think. EVERYTHING around a child is going to influence them, yes, including "a pointless war" or abusive parents. It's the less extreme factors (such as music or video games) that perhaps affect us the most, because it may be such a subtle comment that consciously we don’t even realize it. There is no ignoring the multiple studies that have been conducted over the past ten years proving this connection. I too am sick of hearing the rant about how Eminem is causing middle class white boys to drop out of school and join gangs, the evidence that media does play a role in these incidents is too overwhelming to ignore.
I agree that the media does influence, well everybody. The way people dress, talk etc. And you're righ you can't ignore that the media influences us. I just don't think that Ice Cube could make me MURDER anyone. But maybe me and the 1,500 kids at this schoola are special. Lucky us! :)
I agree with the red-stapler is saying that the media isn’t all to blame for violence in the world today. The media showcases entertainment with the option of people choosing to believe in the violence presented or just watching it for pure entertainment. This is choice that people make everyday whether to take something serious or not. Media isn’t to blame for those teenagers who are poor, and they don’t have access to the media because they can still be involved in gangs and shootings. The teenagers learn from their surroundings and culture how to fight or become violent not necessarily from the media. If a teenager is living in poor family and his/her parent is addicted to drugs or isn’t influential in the teenager’s life, that could cause the teenager to become violent. The teenager’s reaction isn’t from the violence in media; it is from the issues of family problems. The teenager’s emotions are coming out and instead of talking them through; he/she resorts to violence. In this case, the media can’t be blamed for teenagers’ emotions and their ability to deal with tragedies. I know from my own experience that when I am upset I don’t resort to shooting the person I am mad at because that is how it is sometimes portrayed in the media. Instead, I work through my problems and don’t resort to violence.
